My Malaysian dream
So magnanimous of our beloved Prime Minister to have offered the position of prime minister one day, perhaps, to the Chinese. Perhaps, a very kind gesture to the supportive Chinese component party that threw its weight behind him during the last general elections. Let's look at the plausibility of such a proposal...
A Chinese prime minister would mean that this person will come from MCA. Umno will no longer be the main component party. The Chinese prime minister will be given the task of selecting his Cabinet ministers. The Chinese prime minster will be making national policy decisions on economy and the distribution of wealth. Umno will be a secondary component party.
Words do come cheap and if the Chinese people fall for it again and again ... as do the people of Teluk Kemang and some pig farmers, then it shall be the plight of the Chinese people themselves. As long as there is the Barisan Nasional includes three major component parties along racial lines, there will never be a Malaysian Malaysia. As long as the country wishes to play racial politics and not see poor as poor, and corrupt as corrupt or businessmen as businessmen, then it will always be walking on eggshells waiting for a racial explosion and living under the fear of "May 13".
When I was a young lad in Malaysian Sekolah Rendah, we learned Tatarakyat and that Ali, Ah Kow and Ramasamy would walk hand in hand, play marbles together, skip rope and laugh together. That youthful idealism has not faded and I have a dream that one day there will be no longer questions on Astro forms or government forms that ask the question of keturunan/race but kewarganegaraan/nationality.
I do not so dare as to fantasise of my children becoming prime minister and that's alright, but that at least he is able to proudly declare himself a Malaysian and receive the full benefits of what it means to be a useful, contributing citizen. No longer living under the fear of racial divisions but serving a country that fights poverty, corruption and for the freedom of all Malaysians alike.
